Sculptor, mainly in bronze. Born 19 February 1915 in Norwich. Studied at the Norwich School of Art from 1934 to 1936 and later at the Royal College of Art from 1938 to 1940, as well as again from 1946 to 1948; served as studio assistant to renowned sculptor Henry Moore between 1936 and 1939. Served in the Royal Air Force from 1941 to 1946, spending time on the Cocos Islands, where he drew inspiration for many of his works featuring crabs. Represented at the Venice Biennale in both 1952 and 1964, the Antwerp Sculpture Biennale in 1953 and 1959, the São Paulo Bienal in 1958, among others. Held his first solo exhibition at Gimpel Fils in 1957 and later showcased his work in New York at the Paul Rosenberg Gallery from 1958 to 1959. Awarded an Italian state scholarship in 1956. Taught sculpture at the Chelsea School of Art between 1948 and 1960; appointed Professor of Sculpture at the Royal College of Art in 1960.
