Post-Printing Steps: Note: The block shown was printed in two colors. This resulted from using up both ends of two spools and is not necessary for this project. 1. Build a pinnable base to facilitate blocking. For best results, create a two-layer base with one section fitting into the depression at the bottom of the block and the second, the same size as the full bottom of the block. Particle board should be avoided due to its tendency to split when nailed. 2. Glue wooden pieces together and let them dry. 3. Attach the wooden base to the printed block. Overview and Background: The 3D Printed Hat Block This project reproduces an original 1940's hat block scanned and edited for optimal printing. This particular file has high infill and is very sturdy, although the infill can be reduced while maintaining the integrity of the block. The product is extremely sturdy and can be used with both straw and felt blocking techniques. However, when blocking with felt, please keep in mind that plastic tends to melt and avoid hitting the uncovered block directly with steam or touching it directly with hot tools. Steaming a hat while on the block seems okay. In addition, the block itself is not pinnable; however, if attached to a wooden base (instructions given), it functions perfectly.
