Pointe du Hoc, located on the Normandy coast in the Calvados region of the English Channel, presents a unique landscape featuring a cliff edge measuring 25 to 30 meters high, with a pebble beach approximately ten meters wide situated at its base. Situated within the municipality of Cricqueville-en-Bessin, this location served as one of the key operations sites for the Normandy landings on June 6, 1944. Strategically positioned between Utah Beach (to the west) and Omaha Beach (to the east), Pointe du Hoc was heavily fortified by German forces. According to Allied aerial reconnaissance, heavy artillery pieces were identified at the point, which posed a significant threat to two nearby beaches. Given its critical role in securing the success of the landing, it was deemed essential to disable these artillery pieces as quickly as possible.
