Pneumatic clutches use a piston running in a cylinder to generate axial thrust for building up torque, while spring-applied brakes employ springs to create the necessary axial force. In combined units, both frictional connections are created - one with air pressure on the clutch side and another with spring pressure on the brake side. The number of springs and their pressure can be adjusted based on the required torque level.
