Details Using an Arduino Nano, I created this compact LED mushroom display with a glowing effect. To achieve different sizes, print the caps and stems using varying scale settings. Stems can be printed without top or bottom layers with two perimeters, while caps require one to two bottom layers with minimal infill to allow for unique light patterns. A brim was used on the stems for easier placement, which will eventually be covered by moss. After printing, punch a hole in the bottom layer of each cap for LED insertion. Follow the wiring diagram and use the provided Arduino code from the downloads section, adjusting LDR values as necessary. For those interested in creating a PCB version, I've linked my Autodesk Circuits IO build page for reference. Any type of sheet moss will work for this project; an example is shown below. Using driftwood adds a unique look to each display. I purchased mine from the specified link, and alternatives like twigs and branches can be used instead. A planter with a hole at the bottom provides easy access to wiring. Any available protoboard can be cut to size for use in this project. Assembly For guidance on wiring, refer to how my wires were run. Connectors are covered in hot glue for insulation, although it's likely not necessary. Solder 15-inch leads to the LEDs and LDR. Run these leads through the stems. Place the LEDs in the bottom hole of the planter and position the LDR in one of the slits on the side of the planter. Add a tree branch to the planter, filling it almost to the top with moss. Use superglue to attach the caps to the stems, placing the LEDs in their respective holes. If desired, add small amounts of moss to the brim area. I used hot glue to secure the planter to its base and the Arduino to the bottom of the base. Solder the leads to the Arduino and power it using a suitable USB cable or battery pack (I employed a JST connector for easy connection).
