A pillow block is essentially a housing with an integrated anti-friction bearing. In contrast to other flange blocks or units, the mounted shaft in a pillow block lies parallel to the mounting surface and perpendicular to the centerline of the attachment holes. Pillow blocks may house various types of rolling elements such as ball, cylindrical roller, spherical roller, tapered roller, or metallic/synthetic bushing, which define the type of pillow block. These differ from plumber blocks, which are bearing housings supplied without bearings and intended for higher load ratings with separately installed bearings. Both types serve to securely mount a bearing, allowing its outer ring to remain stationary while enabling rotation of the inner ring. The housing is fastened to a foundation through base holes, available in split or solid designs. Split housings can be detached into cap and base parts, while single-piece housings offer alternative designs. Dust and contaminant entry prevention measures may be incorporated within sealing arrangements. This ensures a clean environment for the bearing to rotate free of contaminants, maintaining lubrication and thus improving performance and duty cycle.
