Plumb Line Bob
thingiverse
Plumb lines are widely used by carpenters to build perfectly straight edges. A plumb bob, also known as a plummet, is a weight that hangs from a string and serves as a vertical reference line, or plumb-line. It's essentially the vertical equivalent of a water level. The bob itself has changed over time, with some now being hollow and filled with sand, pebbles, or other heavy materials to make it more stable. I started by creating a cross-section of the plumb bob's body. 2. Next, I revolved the cross-section to create the three-dimensional shape. 3. Holes were cut and extruded to form the locking mechanism. 4. Fillets were added for extra stability. 5. The basic shape of the cap was extruded. 6. A hole was drilled for the thread to be inserted. 7. A shroud was designed to protect the thread and make it easier to handle the cap. 8. The revolved cut was completed, followed by the addition of bars to hold the thread in place. 9. Finally, fillets were added to complete the design. Project: Plumb Line Bob A plumb line has been an essential tool for centuries, used extensively around the world. Its design has evolved from a simple stone on a string to a more accurate and stable pointed tip. This project aims to create a quintessential maker's tool that will also inspire children to learn about hand tools in construction. Usage: 1. Simply push a piece of thread through the cap. 2. Tie it to the bars inside the cap. 3. Push the cap through the top hole on the body and twist it to secure it in place. 4. Hang the string from a nail or pin, and once stable, it will be a straight line perpendicular to the ground regardless of surface irregularities. The hollow bob can be filled with sand, pebbles, or other heavy materials to increase its stability.
