I work extensively on Arduino projects and I've found that compact AC-to-USB power supplies offer an affordable and convenient way to provide 5V DC for my projects. I've designed this protective cover that fits snugly over the AC input pins. Both PLA and ABS plastics excel as electrical insulators, but I wouldn't use carbon fibre or flexi filaments for this purpose. To choose suitable plugpacks, I purchase models featuring US-style pins, which makes it easy to attach crimp-on tab connectors. This protective cover then slips on to provide insulation and ensure safety, but refer to the safety guidelines below. CAUTION: Be aware that this design does not provide weatherproofing or electrical insulation. Use it only within a separate enclosure, such as a project box, inside a more substantial container. SAFETY: Handle AC voltage with care; plugpack power supplies vary greatly in quality and price. To protect yourself and others when using devices powered by AC, observe these precautions: design the layout so there are no exposed metal parts that can be touched; ensure any metal components are securely connected to an earth from your power socket. Additionally, attach the 5V negative (or 0V) lead to the AC earth. Ensure your residence or workplace is protected by RCDs. Some compact plugpack power supplies can become quite hot; avoid placing them in small enclosures. Only load these units at half their rated capacity (for example, if you have a 5V @ 1A supply, only use it up to 0.5A). This particular design was created using PLA plastic. To minimize warping, lay the part upside down with the flat surface facing down on the print bed. Smooth any sharp edges around the wire holes to prevent chafing. Secure the cover firmly to the power supply using a small amount of super glue or electrical tape. Never manipulate AC voltage unless you are highly qualified and well aware of what you're doing.
