Plesiosaur Bone Fossil
sketchfab
This fossil could be the scapula of a massive marine reptile like a plesiosaur. If confirmed, it would rank among the rarest plesiosaur fossils found in New Mexico. Plesiosaurs were long-necked predators that stalked schools of small fish, ammonites, and other invertebrates with stealth. Many plesiosaur skeletons have been discovered with round, smooth stones called gastroliths in or near their abdomens, indicating they ingested these rocks to facilitate digestion. Occasionally, more than 100 stones are found associated with a single plesiosaur fossil. This behavior is also observed today in various animals like crocodiles and penguins that actively swim, as well as ground-dwelling birds such as chickens and ostriches. https://www.nps.gov/articles/series.htm?id=7B32EA8A-A130-11C3-E755871E8385F30E
