playground_spool Alarm system for your 3D printer spool to let you know when prints are finished or failed based on Adafruit's Circuit Playground. Github repo: https://github.com/fede2cr/playground_spool Thingiverse: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1920690 The project consists of two parts: A 3D printed adapter attaches a Circuit Playground and battery to a 3D printer filament spool. Software monitors the rotation of the spool using the accelerometer on the Playground. When rotation stops, it signals either a completed print or an extruder malfunction. Parts: playground_spool_v1.stl: First prototype, suitable for some but not all spool brands playground_spool_v2.stl: Second try, bigger fillet in the bottom and 150mAph lipo battery pocket, with reinforcement for the playground bumper; recommended version playground_spool_v3.stl: Third iteration, fillers in the battery slot for a better fit, raised playground bumper due to previous difficulties, and slight downward adjustment of reinforcement Instructions: Print parts with support using semi-flexible filament, with the playground bumper facing up. Load software into the Circuit Playground. Place the Playground inside its bumper within the 3D printed piece, connect the battery, and tuck it away in its pocket. Insert the 3D printed part into the filament spool and initiate a new print. When either the print completes or an extruder malfunction occurs, the Playground detects loss of rotation (LOR) and beeps to signal your attention. TODO: Tighten the battery within the pocket Reduce the pocket for the spool holder to minimize material usage Wishlist: Average rotation speed and indicate visually if it's faster or slower than average.
