PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is a multiplayer online battle royale game developed and published by PUBG Corporation, a subsidiary of Bluehole. The game was inspired by Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene's previous mods for other games, which were based on the 2000 film Battle Royale. Greene directed the creation of the standalone game, which lets up to one hundred players parachute onto an island and scavenge for weapons and equipment while killing others and avoiding getting killed themselves. As the game progresses, the available safe area of the map decreases in size, pushing surviving players into tighter areas where they must encounter each other. The last player or team standing wins the round. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds was released on Microsoft Windows via Steam's early access beta program in March 2017 and received a full release on December 20, 2017. The same month, the game was released by Microsoft Studios for the Xbox One via its Xbox Game Preview program. Tencent Games localized and released the game in China, while two mobile versions were also released for Android and iOS in early 2018. By March 2018, the Windows version had sold over thirty million copies and reached a peak concurrent player count of over three million on Steam. Battlegrounds received positive reviews from critics during both its early access period and final release. Reviewers praised the game's new types of gameplay that could be easily approached by players of any skill level and its high replayability. The game was nominated for Game of the Year and other awards in 2017 and is considered by Greene to be the defining game of the battle royale genre. Several video games followed Battlegrounds' success by adding battle royale-style modes, while a number of clones primarily from China appeared. PUBG Corporation has run small tournaments and introduced in-game tools to help with broadcasting the game to spectators, aiming for it to become a popular eSport.
