PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is a multiplayer online battle royale game developed by PUBG Corporation, a subsidiary of Bluehole. The game was inspired by the 2000 film Battle Royale and has its roots in mods created by Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene for other games. Under Greene's creative direction, the game evolved into a standalone title where up to one hundred players parachute onto an island and scavenge for weapons and equipment to eliminate opponents while avoiding getting eliminated themselves. The playable area shrinks over time, forcing surviving players into smaller spaces and increasing the likelihood of encounters. The last player or team standing wins the round. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds was initially released on Steam in March 2017 through its early access beta program before receiving a full release on December 20, 2017. Microsoft Studios released the game for Xbox One via its Xbox Game Preview program later that same month. The game was localized and launched by Tencent Games in China, while two mobile versions based on PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds were also released for Android and iOS in early 2018. By March 2018, the Windows version had sold over thirty million copies and reached a peak concurrent player count of over three million on Steam, an all-time high. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds received widespread critical acclaim from reviewers during both its early access period and final release. While critics noted that the game was not fully polished and had some technical issues, they praised it for offering new types of gameplay that were accessible to players of any skill level and highly replayable. The game received several Game of the Year nominations and other awards in 2017, cementing its status as a defining title in the battle royale genre. Several other video games followed in PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' footsteps by incorporating battle royale-style modes, while a number of clones emerged primarily from China. PUBG Corporation has organized several small tournaments and introduced in-game tools to facilitate broadcasting the game for spectators, with the goal of making it a popular eSport.
