Pocket devices include CD players, cassette players, FM radios, and MD players. Often called a "player" (from the English word player), it is typically a portable audio or video-reproducing gadget. Sony's Discman D-50 was the first portable digital player in 1984. Mini CD players followed in 1992, but MD players gained popularity due to copy protection technology despite their high cost. They didn't completely replace CD players. The first MP3 player, as we know it today, launched in 1996 and won an audience award at a major internet conference. However, they had limited memory due to expensive flash storage. South Korea's MPMan introduced 32MB devices in mid-1998, followed by Compaq's hard drive-based player with almost 5GB of memory. Other manufacturers used CDs as media. Apple debuted the iPod in October 2001, with its second generation supporting Windows. Archos launched the first portable media player for photos and videos in 2007. Meanwhile, digital music players emerged in mobile phones. By 2005, major manufacturers had released musicphones, influencing the development of the iPhone.
