Plato at The Louvre, Paris
myminifactory
The renowned sculptor Selanion of the Peloponnese crafted a stunning portrait of Plato, dated 428-348 BC, specifically for the gardens of the esteemed Academy of Athens. The commission was allegedly given by Mithridates, as recorded in Diogenes Laërtius's "De Vitis Philosophorum" (III, 25), referenced in Favorinus' "Memorabilia." Although the commission's identification remains unclear and its exact creation date is uncertain, the last two letters of the philosopher's name on this worn bust serve as conclusive evidence.
