Plateau Site (or Kala)
sketchfab
This is the site where the village of Nivica once stood, until 1914 when it was ravaged by the Greek army (see references 3 and 4). The village itself has a long history dating back at least to 1430, when Ottoman tax records first documented its presence. However, it's possible that the village has even older roots. In the 1930s, renowned English historian Nicholas Hammond from the University of Bristol visited this site and observed that "This would be an ideal location for a fortified town in southern Epirus" (Hammond, 1967, p. 216). During his visit to the area where the old village once stood (see reference 1), he discovered a substantial wall that he believed dated back to between 480 and 150 BC, when the region was under the rule of the Epirote League and the Chaonians. In 2018, a team from the University of Bristol known as Project Nivica Archaeology was invited by Auron Tare to explore Nivica and its surroundings as part of the sustainable development project for the area.
