The origins of this style likely date back to the historic Episcopal Church in Barcelona. The Visigoths were a powerful branch of Germanic peoples known as the Goths, who roamed Europe during Late Antiquity. Emerging from earlier groups such as the Thervingi, they invaded Rome in 376 and defeated the Romans at Adrianople in 378. Their relations with the Romans fluctuated between war and treaties until Alaric I led them into Italy, where they sacked Rome in 410. The Visigoths then settled in southern Gaul and eventually Spain and Portugal, establishing the Visigothic Kingdom. They entered Hispania in 415 and dominated the region until the Moorish invasion of 711 brought their kingdom to an end. This era had a profound impact on Iberian art, which is characterized by the distinctive style of the Visigoths. In the English-speaking world, this style is often classified as Migration art, while in Portugal and Spain it is seen as Pre-Romanesque. The Visigoths' art encompasses various forms, including architecture, craftsmanship, particularly jewelry-making, and even calligraphy.
