Revamped Plastruder MK5: A Robust and Reliable Extrusion Solution The MakerBot Plastruder MK5, the next-generation extrusion mechanism, has been thoroughly tested and is now available for purchase. Designed with reliability, low maintenance, and ease of use in mind, the MK5 revolutionizes MakerBot's extrusion process. To create a more robust and reliable hot end, the extruders' heating element, barrel, and nozzle have been completely redesigned. Stainless steel components offer precision machining for a heavy and strong construction that ensures smooth extrusion over extended periods. The heating element has also been reinvented, using two matching power resistors that screw-mount directly to the stainless steel MK5 Thermal Core for even heat distribution. The reduced footprint of the MK5 Plastruder results from a redesigned filament guide mechanism inspired by the "Paxtruder." A Delrin plunger secures in place with a thumbscrew, creating a low-friction surface for smooth filament glide and precise alignment with the MK5 Drive Gear. The custom-machined stainless steel MK5 Drive Gear boasts 100% greater push strength than the MK4 Extruder Pulley, ensuring reliable extrusion. The gear is also easily cleanable without removal from the plastruder body. To accommodate the larger surface of the MK5 Thermal Core, the extruder requires more power, which is supplied by the Relay Board Kit, already in use with Heated Build Platforms. This setup ensures steady power without straining sensitive circuits or microcontrollers. The combination of innovative components, redesigned filament guide, and stainless steel construction results in a significantly improved extrusion solution that can be easily mounted to existing CupCake CNC Z-stages for instant machine enhancement.
