To measure maximum drive force prior to failure, use a laser-cut test rig compatible with Plastruder MK4. For details on its usage, refer to this blog post: http://blog.makerbot.com/2010/05/21/mk5-drive-gear-now-with-science. To begin, disengage the filament drive, clean motor teeth, reattach the motor, and set the idler wheel distance. Clamp the extruder's filament drive against the force gauge probe, then record peak force in Push mode while running the filament drive at full-on speed (255 PWM). The test ends when the filament fails and the force gauge reading peaks.
