Plaster Mask Mould
sketchfab
This is a plaster of paris mold made from my face in January 1994. Initially, my face was wrapped tightly in plaster strips and allowed to dry completely for about an hour. To make removal easier, vaseline was applied all over my face, and straws were carefully inserted into my nostrils while I kept my eyes closed the whole time. The resulting mask was then removed and placed upside down in a space where it was filled with liquid plaster of paris. Once this had dried completely, the bandage layer was taken off, leaving behind this mold. Later on, the holes in my nostrils were filled in. Using this mold allowed me to create perfectly fitting masks for use in theater productions. These masks were made by applying clay directly onto the surface of the mold to build up any facial characteristics of the mask. It's the repeated application of clay that has given the mold its brown color over time. The white markings are a result of 20 years of storage with an original bandage mask layer covering it for protection. This was scanned on February 6, 2016.
