In impoverished Mesopotamia, intricate plaster ornamentation defined the grandeur of Parthian and Sasanian imperial buildings. Master craftsmen etched deeply into plaster surfaces to craft intricate patterns, making them seem almost lifelike in three dimensions. Originally gleaming gold and painted vibrant hues, the plaster now appears a dull stone tone. Any modern re-creations would undoubtedly appear garish and over-the-top.
