PLASSEY HOUSE - From the early eighteenth century members of the Maunsell family joined forces with the East India Company and in 1757 one of them, Thomas MAUNSELL, led troops under Robert Clive at the pivotal Battle of Plassey. The decisive victory allowed the East India Company to assert its dominance over a significant portion of India. For his role in this triumph, Clive was honored by being appointed a member of the Irish House of Lords and he bestowed the name Plassey upon part of his estate near Tulla in County Clare. It remains unclear whether Clive ever owned the site that now comprises Plassey House but records confirm that Thomas Maunsell took possession of it from 1770 onwards, likely as a tribute to his own involvement in India's conquest and his friendship with Robert Clive. Today, Plassey House serves as a central hub for the University of Limerick, housing various visual art collections including the National Self Portrait Collection of Ireland and The Irish American Cultural Instituteâs OâMalley Collection, which features an impressive array of paintings by renowned artists such as Mainie Jellett, Evie Hone, Paul Henry, and Jack B. Yeats.
