Planetary gearing, also known as epicyclic gearing, is a gear system comprised of central or sun gears with revolving outer or planet gears mounted on movable arms or carriers. This setup may rotate relative to the sun gear and incorporate an external ring gear or annulus meshing with the planet gears. Planetary gears are categorized as simple or compound, with the latter featuring one or more structures: meshed-planet (multiple intermeshing planets in each train), stepped-planet (a shaft connection between two planets in each train), and multi-stage systems (containing two or more planet sets). Compound gears offer advantages over their simple counterparts, including greater reduction ratio, higher torque-to-weight ratio, and increased configuration flexibility.
