Planetary Gearbox Upgrade for X2212 KV980 Motor on Sunsky Quadcopter. This project aimed to create the smallest printable unit with a reliable tooth profile that could print consistently on my Up! mini 3D printer without support, except for the pt9.0 Case Motor Half due to the cable hole. For optimal performance, ream out the planets to 4.5mm using an ordinary Jobber drill bit. Sanding and filing can help smooth the teeth and bearing surfaces. The output bearing is a standard 608Z skate bearing with a 3mm hole for a M3 screw, while a 10x5x4 bearing supports the input shaft in the output as shown. For best results, pack the unit with your preferred grease or oil, such as all-purpose EP2. This planetary gearbox was originally designed as a multiplication gearbox for X2212 KV980 brushless motors on Sunsky quadcopters. However, friction is relatively high without lubrication, and at 50,000 RPM output, it welded itself together under extended load, making it still a work in progress. Update: Additional parts pt10.0 and pt11.0 were added for the reduction drive. Testing today with Tamiya Cera-Grease (Boron Nitride based) showed both reduction and multiplication types ran well but produced noise up to speed.
