A direct drive planetary gear extruder for 1.75mm filament is designed for vertical X-axis (Mendel) mount but can be adapted to other carriage types or filament diameters. It accommodates any J-head hotend and utilizes a NEMA17 geared motor, while bearings are sourced from eBay. After printing the extruder with ABS at 0.1mm layer height and 50% infill (taking around 5 hours), the extruder insert should be printed with ABS at 0.1mm layer height and 50-75% infill, taking approximately 35-50 minutes. The E3D hotend is also integrated into this setup for optimal performance.
