Planetary Base

Planetary Base

thingiverse

This base in designed so that Mars can become a place where a large number of humans can work together to better their knowledge and how we survive of foreign planets. The base is printed on the 3D Printer and then put together in such a way that the central capsule in the center can rotate so that each capsule is isolated. This means precious resources can be saved since that area isn't in use and it means the capsule doesn't need oxygen or other precious aspects that are in use elsewhere. There are 6 separate capsules which all have a different function and there is also the central capsule. The first capsule is the scientific capsule which is located at the top of the last photo. The capsule it used to research everything we can about Mars while we are there to discover if what we do is having any effects and for us to have a better understanding of Mars itself and what it's made up of. The second capsule is the recreation capsule which is at the top right of the last photo. This is used as a calming place for the astronauts in which it will remind the of home and will have some home comforts to allow them to relax. The third capsule is the living capsule which is on the right of the last photo. This is where all the astronauts can sleep and wash so that they can stay hygienic and be well rested with more comforts from home being here and computers able to send messages back home or to keep a video diary so that the astronauts can have someone to talk to privately improving their mental health dramatically. The fourth capsule is the oxygen and water storage which is at the bottom of the last photo. In this capsule all water and oxygen and other elements which make the base habitable are controlled, filtered and disturbed around the base. The fifth capsule is the farming capsule which is at the bottom left of the photo. This has two main functions, the first is to grow food for the astronauts to allow staying on Mars a more viable option with food production being able to be closely controlled. The second function it has it to grow dark extremophiles such as lichens and algae and then distribute them all over mars in such a way that Mars' surface absorbs more sunlight increasing the temperature of Mars, which would reduce the albedo of Mars' surface in a sort of terraforming way. The sixth capsule is the final capsule and acts as the brain of the base which is at the top left of the last photo. It controls the whole base as would a brain for a human. With all the best conditions being reached in all active areas of the base. The central base is all over activities occur and where all astronauts can meet and discuss what is going on. The base has many adaptations to it to help it on Mars. With the base of each capsule being drilled into the ground by its platform it is sturdier and less likely to move. The platforms the capsules sit on also act as transport, with all pipes for water, heat and warmth coming from here into each capsule. The windows of the base only point inwards except for the center which has thicker glass so that the dust storms don't become a problem with the windows. Also for the dust storms each capsule has a protective plate which slides across covering the gaps between capsules as shown in second and third photo. To power the base there is solar panels on the center base absorbing as much light as they can to power the base. The vents at the top of the center base allow the take in and output of gases which allow samples to be taken. Finally the outside of the capsules have thick walls for insulation and at the outer edges of the circle they make and at the bottom have thick radiation shields to protect from what may end up being the true problem on space exploration to Mars.
