P-51 Mustang North American P-51 Mustang Single-Seater Fighter The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang is a top-notch, long-range, single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber used in World War II and the Korean War. The plane was designed in April 1940 by James Kindelberger's team at North American Aviation to meet a British Purchasing Commission requirement. Rather than building an old design from another company, North American Aviation proposed creating a more modern fighter. The NA-73X airframe rolled out on September 9, 1940, just 102 days after the contract was signed, and took its first flight on October 26.
