The plane was designed in April 1940 by James Kindelberger's team at North American Aviation to meet a British Purchasing Commission requirement. Rather than building an old design from another company, North American Aviation proposed creating a more modern fighter. The NA-73X airframe rolled out on September 9, 1940, just 102 days after the contract was signed, and took its first flight on October 26.
