The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine supersonic fighter originally developed by Lockheed Martin for the USAF. Designed as a top-notch air superiority day fighter, it transformed into an all-weather multirole aircraft with great success. Over 4,500 fighters have been built since production began in 1976. Although no longer purchased by the US Air Force, advanced versions are being produced for international buyers. Lockheed Martin acquired General Dynamics' aircraft business in 1993 and merged with Martin Marietta in 1995 to become a leading global defense company.
