PLA Cube Gears for Replicator 2
cults3d
Many of us have been caught off guard by the realization that the pins for Emmett's Screwless Cube Gears are not compatible with PLA material. The pins prove to be too stiff, and my own experience has shown that attempting to force them in can lead to cracking the pins and causing damage to the piece itself. Determined to find a solution, I set out to design alternative pins specifically for PLA. My initial attempt involved creating flexible end tabs, which did work, but unfortunately, the cube gear axle is too short to effectively support this approach. Undeterred, I moved on to my next attempt and modified the internal structure of the pin's tip to make it more pliable for PLA use while also redesigning the protrusions. These new pins were designed using an ACIS solid in Shark FX (a sfx file is included) ensuring that they will behave seamlessly with Makerware, ReplicatorG, and skeinforge. They snap into place with moderate force and rotate freely, providing a smooth and reliable performance.
