PLA compatible elliptical gear set
thingiverse
Here's a completely redesigned elliptical gear set compatible with PLA, featuring herringbone gears that perform exceptionally well when printed in PLA or ABS. I deliberately avoided working on the traditional elliptical gear design due to its inherent weakness - the pins would break off entirely during the printing process in both PLA and ABS materials. In contrast, my new design prints smoothly and accurately in PLA. Here's how I approached this project: This is a comprehensive redesign that incorporates parkinbot's innovative gearcutting technique and utilizes the mathematical principles of ellipses. To minimize data redundancy within OpenSCAD, I reduced the toothed rack to two teeth while preserving strict data reduction. To create your custom elliptical gear set, follow these steps: 1. Save the outline generated by elliptic.scad as elliptic.stl; however, refrain from printing this file. 2. Insert the required parameters (a, b, and focus) into parameters.scad, which can be accessed through the terminal window of OpenSCAD. 3. Run gear1a.scad, allowing it to import both elliptic.stl and parameters.scad. This will initiate a calculation process using the difference() command, ultimately producing your customized gear set. This two-step process significantly accelerates rendering times while providing greater convenience. As an alternative, you can use the mirrored version of this design, which is available in gear1b.stl. For more information on this project, please visit: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3177189
