It's on par with the American AIM-120 AMRAAM and Russia's R-77. In 2001, news about the Leihua Electronic Technology Research Institute's PL-12, initially known as the SD-10, started circulating. Chinese developers got some help from Russian companies Vympel NPO and Agat. Liang Xiaogeng is believed to be the mastermind behind this project. Four test launches were successful in 2004. By 2005, the missile was officially called the PL-12.
