Human Resources Manager No Longer a Job Title of Choice As recently as 10 years ago, being referred to as an HR manager was seen as a prestigious job title and a career goal for many professionals. However, over the past decade, the term "HR" has become increasingly unpopular, with some even using it as a pejorative. In an effort to rebrand itself, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the largest HR professional organization in the world, is making a concerted effort to shift its focus from just being a human resources manager. Instead, it wants professionals to think of themselves as business partners who are responsible for helping organizations succeed. According to SHRM CEO Johnny C. Taylor Jr., HR managers should be seen as strategic thinkers who are able to provide expertise and guidance that helps drive business outcomes. They must also be able to navigate complex issues such as compliance, employee engagement, and talent management. Taylor notes that the role of the human resources manager has evolved significantly over time and is no longer just about hiring and firing or dealing with employee complaints. Today's HR professionals must have a much broader skill set and be able to wear many hats. In fact, SHRM has developed a certification program specifically for HR professionals who want to demonstrate their expertise in strategic talent management. This certification is designed to help HR managers take on more of a business leadership role and provide value to the organization beyond just administrative tasks. Taylor believes that by focusing on the strategic aspects of human resources, HR professionals can build trust with their stakeholders, drive business growth, and make a real difference in the success of their organizations.
