A piston is a vital part of reciprocating engines, pumps, gas compressors, and pneumatic cylinders. It's the moving element within a cylinder that's sealed with piston rings. In an engine, its role is to convert gas pressure expansion force into mechanical energy through a piston rod or connecting rod to the crankshaft. Conversely, in pumps, it transfers force from the crankshaft to compress or expel fluid within the cylinder. Certain engines utilize pistons as valves too, exposing or concealing cylinder ports.
