Internal combustion engine pistons are designed to convert the explosive force of gasoline into mechanical energy. A typical piston consists of a cylindrical body with a small end that fits snugly into the cylinder head and a larger end that connects to the connecting rod. The piston moves up and down in the cylinder, driven by the explosive force of the fuel-air mixture. As it rises, it uncovers the intake valve, allowing a new charge of air and fuel to enter the cylinder. Then, as it descends, it closes the exhaust valve, trapping the hot gases inside the cylinder. The piston's motion is transferred to the crankshaft through the connecting rod, ultimately propelling the vehicle forward.
