Piston Rod

Piston Rod

Within a piston engine, a piston rod connects the piston to the crosshead and subsequently to the connecting rod, which powers the crankshaft or (for steam locomotives) the driving wheels. However, in internal combustion engines like those found in vehicles, trunk pistons are used, combining the piston and crosshead without the need for a rod. In such engines, 'piston rod' is sometimes interchangeably referred to as a 'connecting rod.' Engines with crossheads incorporate piston rods, as seen in many steam locomotives and large marine diesel engines.
