Large slow-speed Diesel engines often necessitate extra support for lateral forces on the piston. Crosshead pistons are typically utilized in these engines. The primary piston possesses a large piston rod extending downwards to an effectively smaller-diameter secondary piston. Gas sealing is the responsibility of the main piston, which also carries the piston rings. The smaller piston merely serves as a mechanical guide, running within a small cylinder as a trunk guide and carrying the gudgeon pin. Due to the additional weight of these pistons, they are not employed in high-speed engines.
