A piston functions as a vital part of various devices, including reciprocating engines, compressors, pumps, and cylinders. It's contained within a cylinder and sealed by rings to maintain a gas-tight environment. In an engine, the piston transforms the force from expanding gas in the cylinder into motion for the crankshaft via rods. Conversely, pumps transfer force from the crankshaft to the piston for fluid compression or ejection. Some engines also employ the piston as a valve, covering and uncovering ports in the cylinder wall. When a petrol engine is ignited by a spark plug, the resulting combustion generates energy that pushes the piston downward.
