The Parabellum, also known as the Luger, is a semi-automatic pistol powered by recoil. Georg Luger patented its design in 1898 and German armaments manufacturer Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) began producing it in 1900. The Luger system was based on earlier work by Hugo Borchardt's C-93 pistol. Luger reworked the Borchardt system, resulting in a significantly smaller bolt assembly and slide. The first Parabellum pistol was adopted by the Swiss Army in May 1900.
