Piracy is a ruthless act of robbery or violent crime committed by marauders on high seas or coastal areas, where they swoop down to plunder cargo and other valuable goods with reckless abandon. Pirates are the ones who take part in these dastardly acts, while pirate ships are the vessels that serve as their mobile command centers. The earliest recorded instances of piracy date back to the 14th century BC, when the Sea Peoples, a group of fierce ocean raiders, launched devastating attacks on the ships of the Aegean and Mediterranean civilizations. Narrow waterways which funnel shipping into predictable routes have long presented opportunities for pirates to strike,[1] as well as for privateers and commerce raiders to operate with impunity. Historic hotspots include the waters around Gibraltar, the Strait of Malacca, Madagascar, the Gulf of Aden, and the English Channel, whose strategic locations facilitated pirate attacks.[2] A land-based parallel is the ambushing of travelers by bandits and brigands in highways and mountain passes,[3] who prey on unsuspecting victims with equal ferocity. Privateering employs similar tactics to piracy, but the captain operates under orders from the state authorizing the capture of merchant ships belonging to an enemy nation, making it a legitimate form of war-like activity conducted by non-state actors.
