Piranha Plants (also known as Piranhas, misspelled as pirana plants in early documents) are massive, triffid-like flora encountered throughout the Mario series. They are carnivorous and seem to be based on Venus flytraps, consuming anything that approaches them. The head of a Piranha Plant is most commonly either red or green with multiple additional colors. Originally, Piranha Plants were found exclusively in pipes, bursting out and biting anything nearby. Currently, Piranha Plants can be found both inside and outside pipes, and may constantly bite or wait for Mario to approach before doing so.
