The Piper Malibu is a lightweight aircraft, specifically designed to be powered by a single engine and accommodate one pilot and five passengers. Textures and bump maps are included, along with a high-resolution Photoshop format available for editing. Users can easily change the markings to their liking. The first production version of the Piper Malibu took flight in August 1982, and FAA certification was obtained in September 1983. Deliveries began one month later. A total of 404 aircraft with Continental TSIO-520 engines were built before this model was replaced by the 350P. The PA-46-310P is powered by a Teledyne Continental Motors TSIO-520BE engine, which produces 310 horsepower. This aircraft has several advantages over newer models, including the Mirage. Fuel efficiency, range, and the ability to cruise at "lean-of-peak" are three key benefits of the original Malibu. The PA-46-310P has a maximum cruising range of 1550 nautical miles with reserves, while the PA-46-350P initially had a maximum cruising range of only 1,055 nautical miles. However, this range was later increased to 1345 nautical miles. In 1986, production of the Continental-powered Malibu was discontinued due to a series of incidents and accidents attributed to engine failures. One such accident resulted in a settlement worth over $32 million to a pilot injured in the crash of a Malibu. The poor record of the original Malibu may be attributed to improper engine operation. The TSIO-520BE engine, unlike most other Continental engines at the time, was designed to operate with the mixture set to the lean side of peak TIT ("Lean of Peak"). However, many pilots chose to operate on the rich side of peak TIT ("Rich of Peak"), leading to excessive engine temperatures and cylinder pressures, and premature failures. Owners who operate their Malibus according to the recommended Lean of Peak method have reported excellent reliability.
