Piper 2 - T-Rex 5015 Radial Fan Mount
prusaprinters

The standard axial fan design did not offer enough airflow/cooling for high-speed/higher temp PLA printing on the Piper 2. I didn't want to re-invent a fan cooler nozzle just yet, but needed the air flow that radial fan's produce.

Packaging is a challenge since there is less than 25mm to position a vertical fan to either the front or the back of the Piper 2 X-Carriage.

With the suggestion of another Piper 2 builder, I'm using the T-Rex MK3 fan. I've asked the T-Rex designer if he could make the mount hole a little smaller and extend a flange so the 5015 fan can snap into the nozzle. My tests have been good with the current T-Rex MK3 design.

Yellow part is the fan/cooler nozzle mount

Red part is the T-Rex MK3 Nozzle : https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2022857

5015 Radial Fan (12v, 24v, and 5v options): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DB7DLMM

Purchase Parts:

6-32 x 3/4" taper head screws w/nuts. I used 1" long screws cut down to 3/4" long

6 x 3/8" sheet metal screw - holds mount and T-Rex fan together.

Note: Round head screws may scrape on the gantry EMT pipe.

T-Rex is centered to E3D nozzle, about 1mm up from Z0 and about 13mm back. T-Rex nozzle directs air flow down on print, not across the top of the nozzle.

Benchy Images - Left hand benchy is T-Rex and 5015 radial fan, right hand bency is axial fan cooler. Both printed at 150mm/s and 228C on a heated glass bed.

Print Settings

Printer:

Anet A8

Rafts:

Doesn't Matter

Supports:

Yes

Resolution:

0.2mm

Infill:

25% to 35%

Filament:
3D Solutech PETG
Real White

Notes:

You may want to add supports just for the angled arm.
