The pipe wrench, known as Stillson wrench in the UK, is an adjustable tool designed for turning soft iron pipes with a rounded surface. The jaw's adjustability allows it to lock firmly within the frame, enabling increased pressure on the handle to tighten the jaws further. Angled teeth on the pipe wrench dig into the soft pipe during operation. However, these wrenches are not suitable for use on hardened steel hex nuts or other fittings due to potential damage to their heads. If a hex nut is unusable due to rounding beyond standard wrench capability, a pipe wrench may be used to break it free. Pipe wrenches come in various sizes by handle length: 10, 12, 14, 18, 24, 36, and 48 inches, with custom options available as well. Traditionally made of cast steel, modern versions also use aluminum for the body but retain steel teeth and jaws. Replacement kits including adjustment rings, springs, and new jaws are available to repair broken wrenches at a lower cost than buying new ones.
