Specimen #2377-921 Pipe. McDowell Site, 31MC41, McDowell County, North Carolina. Excavated by Dr. David Moore in 1986. Unit: 90R350, Level: Plowzone. Weight: 75 oz. Material: Soapstone. This soapstone pipe features a zoomorphic figure carved onto its surface. The figure has a serpentine body and a mammalian head with a weeping eye, teeth-filled mouth, and single horn atop the head. Stylized scales and wings surround the figure. It could represent the mythical Cherokee Uktena: a horned serpent with diamond-shaped crest on its forehead, though this pipe's more mammalian body suggests an association with "Water Cougar" or other underworld figures sometimes linked to the Uktena. For additional information and images of the figure, consult Catawba Valley Mississippian (2002) on pages 206-209.
