Pipe fragment (specimen #040-29) excavated from The Berry Site (31BK22), located in Burke County, North Carolina. Dr. David Moore and Dr. Robin Beck discovered this specimen in 1995 during an excavation of the South Mound area, specifically Section 1 Surface. Weighing in at 13.8 grams, this clay pipe stem fragment was crafted by Native American artisans who used it to smoke tobacco and other native herbs. Notably, pipes were frequently constructed from a variety of materials, including clay and various types of stone. This particular pipe stem features an intriguing zig-zag pattern etched onto its sides, which may be part of a larger effigy design created by the Native Americans.
