Pipe bowl fragment (specimen #056-223). Excavated at The Berry Site (31BK22) in Burke County, North Carolina, by Warren Wilson College Field School in 2010. Unit: N850E201, level: Plowzone 3. Weight: 13.2 grams. Material: Clay used to create it. Native Americans made this pipe bowl fragment, using it to smoke tobacco and other native plants. They often crafted pipes from clay and various types of stone. The soil inside the bowl may hold burned organic materials, which have not been removed to preserve potential future analysis.
