Pipe bowl (specimen #052-150) originates from The Berry Site (31BK22), located in Burke County, North Carolina. In 2009, Warren Wilson College Field School unearthed the artifact during excavation in Unit: N864E190, at Plowzone 1 level. Weighing 25.3 grams, the pipe bowl fragment is crafted from soapstone. This Native American-made smoking vessel was used to consume tobacco and other native plants. Typically made from clay and various stones, this particular pipe bowl boasts a unique carved shape that may have been part of an extensive effigy design.
