Important to get the fan correct. If it doesn't have the push it won't work. This is a real easy experiment to control. I got the idea from George Piper at the USNA. Good luck and have fun. To control the motor I used a L298N: https://create.arduino.cc/projecthub/ryanchan/how-to-use-the-l298n-motor-driver-b124c5 I used a 12v small motor, any 12 volt motor will probably work, but not a computer fan. A computer fan does not have enough push. I used a standard 4” prop: https://www.amazon.com/URBEST%C2%AEDC-6000RPM-Magnetic-Motor-Smart/dp/B00NN2YUWQ/ref=sr_1_12?dchild=1&keywords=12v+dc+motor&qid=1609638638&sr=8-12 I used a HC-SR04 sensor, surprisingly accurate can be controlled with: https://www.tutorialspoint.com/arduino/arduino_ultrasonic_sensor.htm#:~:text=Advertisements,or%201%E2%80%9D%20to%2013%20feet. LED’s optional
