Pinewood Derby Slot Drilling Tool

I crafted a few of these tools and they performed admirably! If your Pack demands that the slots be utilized, it can be challenging to get the axles in without splitting the wood. This tool simplifies that task significantly by allowing one to create a pilot hole for the axle that is aligned perfectly inside the slots. Ideally, one should use a #44 split point cobalt drill bit, but a 5/64" jobber bit is an acceptable substitute. Simply fit the tool over the block so that the alignment lip is inside the slot and use the guide holes to drill from each side. The drill should protrude from the chuck roughly one wheel diameter. This approach works best on uncut and unpainted blocks.
