Pinewood Derby Roadster Shell
thingiverse
This roadster-shaped shell is designed for a pinewood derby car and closely resembles the 1949 Snowberger-Offy Indianapolis 500 racecar. It fits onto a standard pinewood derby wood block, which requires minimal sawing (instructions provided). An updated version (v7) was released on March 29, 2014, with improvements to the exhaust area and four holes for adding cylindrical weights. The STL file "roadster_body.stl" includes support structures and is recommended for those who don't trust their slicer to generate proper supports. An exhaust pipe STL will be available soon. A derivative model/toy, Thing #305925, was also created on April 21, 2014, with the same wheelbase and interchangeable body. Useful accessories like exhaust pipes are available for this model as well. The roadster shell requires ample support during printing, with removable support structures visible in the photos. The beautifully finished make by sourlemonjr is featured in a photo, used with permission. To assemble the car, start with an official pinewood derby wood block and cut it to fit according to the provided instructions. STL files for the steering wheel and driver are included, with the steering wheel in three parts for easier printing. The wood block's dimensions and a model of the wheels are also available in the wings3d source file. The roadster shell is designed to accommodate a curved inside corner, as one would get when using a router or drill during cutting. An STL file of the wood block is provided for reference.
