The dominant tree species of Araucaria forest, protected monitored under strict guidelines, is known as Araucaria [Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze 1898]. Found mainly in southern Brazil and eastern states such as São Paulo, its territory extends into small parts of Argentina and Paraguay. It goes by many names, including Brazilian pine and Pine-Parana; it is also referred to as curi, an indigenous term used since ancient times. Initially described as Columbea angustifolia Bertol. in 1819, the species dates back over 200 million years when its population covered much of Brazil's northeastern region. The conifer is dioecious, evergreen and heliophytic, with mature trees reaching heights of up to 50m high, boasting a trunk diameter of 2.5m at breast height. Its unique shape is characteristic of the Brazilian landscape, resembling a bowl or umbel. In an area once spanning 200 square kilometers, heavy exploitation began in the 19th century due to its economic value and usefulness for wood production as well as its nutritious seeds. Today, only a fraction remains of its original territory; according to IUCN, Araucaria faces the serious threat of extinction, categorizing it under Danger of Extinction criteria.
